Real Engagements

Pismo Beach Engagement

Bri and Thomas are getting married in the Central Valley of California. Since they are originally from the Central Coast they decided to go back to their old stomping grounds  for their engagement session. They started at the beautiful historic San Luis Obispo Mission and ended in amazing Pismo Beach. The weather and settings were perfect, but even better was the relaxed and “at home” vibe that these two sweet hearts have between each other.

How did you two meet?

Thomas and I first met about 5 years ago. We both had been invited to a mutual friends gig she was playing.(The mutual friend and Thomas had dated in the past, and she and I have been friends since 3rd grade.) Of the friends invited, Thomas and I were the only two that showed up. We ended up talking the entire night.

What was your first date like?

I know we went to a restaurant called Steamers, which was located in Pismo beach, CA. I remember ordering what Thomas ordered (fish and chips) I know Thomas made some comment on how we ordered the same thing. (I know he was probably thinking, “Wow this is cool we like the same things”). In reality I did not want to be the one who ordered something more expensive than him, since he was paying of course. 🙂

Thomas, when did you know she was the one?

I can’t recall the exact moment I felt that Bri was the one. I do remember one time we got together after not seeing each other for quite awhile. We met up at a coffee shop and talked for a long time about everything that had been happening in our lives since the last time we’d seen each other, it had been close to 2 years since we’d spoken. Before we left, Bri used the restroom at the coffee shop which required a special key that consisted of a large clothing hanger keychain. I wouldn’t consider myself a “germaphobe” in the least, but I recall having, what I thought to be, a very normal and very typical thought once Bri emerged from the restroom. As she approached me holding the keychain, I said to myself “that thing is probably so disgusting from all the people that take it to the bathroom.” As I was about to share this thought of mine with Bri she comes near and quietly said “all I can think about is how dirty this keychain must be.” She literally took the words out of my mouth. This was the most notable moment of realizing just how much I loved this girl.

How long have you two been together, at the time of engagement?

Thomas and I have been off and on for about 5 years. We both are very driven and independent people. Therefore our drive and passions lead us in opposite directions for awhile. For myself though, Thomas was the only guy I could ever see myself marrying. We reconnected July 4, 2013. So we had been together almost a year when he proposed.

How did he propose?

This is quite a funny story now looking back on it, but the story needs some prefacing. I(the bride) at the time was an event coordinator for a local vineyard who specialized in wedding planning. Therefore when Thomas and I started talking about marriage and had set a date, yes ladies we set a date without the ring, I jumped right into planning mode. From when we were engaged to when we set the date we had about 7 months to plan everything. Being the planner that I am, I dove right in. Again yes without the ring. Weeks into my planning, I went and visited Thomas. During my visit, I was surprised to find out that Thomas had made a purchase, not my ring, but a brand new keyboard. Side note: Thomas is a very talented and passionate musician so this was not just a hobby for him. My first reaction was, “That’s great honey” and then I politely excused myself, went into the bathroom, got on my phone and figured out how much money he had spent on this keyboard. Now I kept my cool for a week or so ladies, but my crazy side had to come out eventually. About a week or so later while meeting with the Pastor that Thomas and I had selected to marry us, (YES I STILL DO NOT HAVE THE RING AT THIS POINT), my crazy came out. In the meeting, I told Thomas how I felt. The purchase of the keyboard, my crazy planning and still no ring. Sooo this all comes out, in front of the Pastor that will be marrying us and of course in front of Thomas. I TRIED TO KEEP MY COOL, BUT A GIRL CAN DO THAT FOR SO LONG. After that meeting, although I did not have that sparkly diamond on my finger. I felt relieved, I felt like “Ok he knows how I feel and I put it all on the table.” Later that day, Thomas and I were getting ready to go to a concert in Santa Cruz. I was finishing up getting ready and while coming out of the bathroom, BEHOLD THOMAS ON ONE KNEE WITH MY SPARKLY RING.

Can you tell us a little bit about your wedding plans so far?

We are doing a very modern/elegant style wedding. Our colors are: navy, champagne, gold and blush. I am also using a variety of natural greenery. I am incorporating some quatrefoil print along with pops of sequins. The guys are wearing navy suits and the ladies are wearing a variety of dresses in different shades ranging of (champagne, gold, blush and rose gold) SEQUINS ARE A PLUS FOR THEM!! I am super excited about the amazing foliage garland my florist is making. These will be elegantly laid down the center of each farmhouse table. I call my style Nate Berkus meets sequins.
